Abstract
Although the philosophical basis and impetus for what has evolved into the European Union (EU) was largely political, the history of European integration has been largely economic. The founding fathers concluded that the most effective way of achieving their goal of political union was through the progressive reduction and elimination of barriers to the movement of economic forces among member states. This, they believed, would produce clear and identifiable economic benefits, leading to support for political integration.
