Rights Discourse

  • Camille C. O’Reilly

Rights discourse figures prominently in the campaigns to obtain funding for Irish-medium schools and for official government recognition of the language. The Irish language activists whom I shall discuss in this section are also professionals in the use of discourse. In their positions as spokespersons for the Irish language, they are more conscious of the process of discourse production than most. Like their counterparts who favour either decolonizing or cultural discourse, their job is to sway people’s opinions, and they actively engage in the struggle for hegemony in the political field.
