Abstract
For nationalism to emerge as a major force in politics, the conditions had to be right. These conditions may conveniently be divided into ‘necessary’ and ‘sufficient’ conditions. While ethnocentrism and an ideology of nationalism are both necessary for nationalist behaviour, the sufficient conditions for strong and widespread nationalism are more difficult to identify.
