Abstract
The transformation still taking place in the new democracies of East-Central Europe comprises several interwoven and, to some degree, simultaneous processes. Changes have occurred in the political system, and the remodelling of the economic order has also brought about adaptations in social structures. In the case of Slovakia and Slovenia, the establishment of new nation states has meant disentangling national economies from the larger and more or less integrated economic systems which preceded them.
