Abstract

Chapter 1 has given a basic introduction to how to analyse images. This chapter considers the science of signs, or semiotics, which has proved a fruitful way of looking at texts of all kinds. One of the great strengths of a semiotic approach is that the reader is encouraged to look at familiar objects and ideas in a fashion that makes them appear strange; nothing is taken for granted. Because of this, it is conceptually difficult; however the effort is repaid in the resulting analyses.
