Abstract
The European continent of the 1990s is characterized by upheavals and crises stretching over the whole span of economic, social and ideological assumptions which underpin the stability and integration of society. This is true in both Western and Eastern Europe, which have been brought together into one whole with the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the sudden demise of communist regimes. While conflicts and dislocation have dominated the Eastern part, Western Europe has found itself in the throes of a profound crisis, accelerated by European unification.
