Peace by Pieces? Mainland—Taiwan Transaction Flows
There is now a considerable body of literature on the recent evolution of relations between the mainland of China and the island of Taiwan. Interest in these relations has accelerated after the gradual liberalization of restrictions on various exchanges between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait since the 1980s, and especially since the sudden reunification of Germany in 1990. While noting the rapid expansion of transactions such as trade and tourism, this literature generally concludes that the political gulf between the two sides remains too wide to suggest any near-term prospects of national reconciliation, not to mention reunification.
