Abstract

Much of this book is concerned with the scope and effectiveness of social policies as these affect children’s health and well-being — that is with the qualitative aspects of our present day child population. However, before we can address these issues it is first necessary to examine basic questions of quantity. In this chapter therefore we set out to provide an overview of the size and social diversity of Britain’s child population.
