The election saw 3724 candidates contest the 659 constituencies; 5.6 per constituency (compared with 2946 in 651 — or 4.5 candidates per seat — in 1992). The ranks were swelled by single-issue parties exploiting the division in the Conservative Party over European integration — Sir James Goldsmith’s Referendum Party (547 candidates) and the UK Independence Party (194 candidates). The Green Party (95) and the bizarre Natural Law Party (196) also contributed to candidate profusion.
