Abstract

The 1997 general election result made clear that the erosion of the Conservative party’s strength involved far more than a simple haemorrhage of electoral support. The Conservatives’ crushing parliamentary defeat could be traced to a series of interlocking developments which together created a new opportunity for a resurgent Labour Party and presented the Conservative leadership with a fresh agenda for the post-election period.
