Abstract

Recent years have seen a massive rise in the number of R&D units set up overseas by Japanese MNEs.1 This chapter will review the motivations and roles of these labs in order to argue that their emergence in Japanese MNEs is at the core of the latest distinctive phase in these companies’ evolution as global competitors.
