Of all the concepts we come across when studying work and employment, ‘skill’ stands out as the most difficult to pin down. Yet, strangely enough it is perhaps one of the few topics that most people might claim to have an understanding about. If you ask someone about a job, they would more than likely be able to tell you whether it is skilled or not, and they would probably be able to give a reasonable explanation as to why they considered it skilled. The problem, however, is that we all stress different aspects of a job in evaluating whether it is skilled or not.
