Morality, Institutions and Civil Society
First I want to thank those who have found me worthy of the award of the Agnelli Prize. No other recognition has ever given me greater pleasure. The award bears a name which stands for the best in Italy’s tradition of public-spirited entrepreneurs. It is given in the capital of Piedmont in which parliamentary democracy had a home since 1848. The Agnelli Prize also confirms my association with its two previous holders, the moral philosopher, Isaiah Berlin, and the moral economist, Amartya Sen.
