An important French intellectual, poet, novelist and dramatist, Delbo survived Auschwitz. She was active in the Resistance, together with her husband, the Communist leader George Dudach. They were both arrested in 1942 and Dudach was executed. Delbo was sent to Auschwitz in 1943. Almost immediately upon her liberation from the camp, Delbo began work on Auschwitz et après, from which the following is taken, but did not publish it until twenty years later.
