Companies need finance to grow, and the raising of finance for international expansion is an important focus in this chapter. The first section deals with foreign direct investment (FDI), the criteria and the means of implementation and financial appraisal. The impact of FDI on host countries, and issues of control of R&D and technology are also addressed. There follows an explanation of the ways international finance can be raised, including an account of the Euromarket and other foreign exchange markets; the services of financial institutions are detailed too, together with an explanation of currency and credit management. There is particular emphasis on the importance of closer liaison between finance and marketing in pricing policy, credit and interest terms and currency management.
