Abstract

Since 1989 our knowledge of the political activities of Stalin and his closest associates has vastly increased. The minutes of the meetings of the highest party and state authorities, and their decisions, are available for the pre-war years. They record the role played by Stalin in many crucial matters. The files also contain hundreds of memoranda written by Stalin, and thousands of memoranda addressed to him, many from members of the Politburo.
