Abstract

The task of implementing the statutory provisions relating to community care in the National Health Service and Community Care Act 1990 falls mainly on the staff within the local authority social services departments. They will be involved in the statutory duties of:
  • preparing and publishing community care plans (see Chapter 25)

  • laying down policies and procedures for assessments (see Chapter 25)

  • purchasing accommodation in residential and nursing homes (see Section D, especially Chapter 28)

  • providing or arranging for the provision of welfare and other services identified through the assessment process (see Chapter 2 on duties and the rest of this chapter)

  • providing an inspection service for residential homes and facilities provided for community care (see Chapter 25)
