The primary focus of this book is on social policy in the United Kingdom. Most social policies affecting the lives of UK residents have been developed within the country on a national basis by the British government, or at a local level by other agencies or authorities with devolved powers from national government; and by and large social policy has been studied and analysed at a national level. As we have already discussed, however, in both economic and social terms Britain is no longer, if it ever was, an isolated national social entity.
