Abstract

My task is to look back on events of the recent past from a personal viewpoint and to hazard a guess as to the near future. I would like to sketch in the post-Second World War policies of the three most important West European countries (Great Britain, France and Germany), around which Western Europe has revolved since and show that these policies continue to have repercussions, even after the revolutionary developments of 1989. First of all, however, I should like to recall some of the past events, whose fifty year anniversaries were commemorated in 1995.
