Abstract

The novels and short stories of the American writer William Faulkner (1897–1962) are set in Mississippi in the South of the USA, and create a whole world of families and characters in stories that range in their date of setting from before the American Civil War, which ended in 1865, to the mid-twentieth century. The Bear (1942) is a short novel whose main character is referred to throughout simply as he, so the whole tale is told from his point of view. His name is Isaac McCaslin (Ike), born in 1867 and brought up by his father and uncle.
