Career aspirations — women managers in retailing

  • Chapter
Women in Organisations

Part of the book series: Management, Work and Organisations ((MWO))

Abstract

This chapter outlines the structure and culture of the retail industry and describes the position of women within retail organisations. We report the experiences of some women managers, their attitudes and choices and their struggles to achieve seniority in a ‘masculine’ culture. The attitudes of retail employers to equal opportunities are assessed, while measures to improve the progress of women in the industry are explored and discussed.
