Abstract

The future of the welfare state is righdy perceived as a major problem for advanced societies, particularly for western European ones. Some aspects of this broad problem exceed the strict domain of economics; but economists are clearly the first ones to be involved. They have now, and they will have in the next decades, to study in depth the welfare state and its adaptation to changing circumstances.
