Entartete Musik: The War Against Modernism

Abstract

It is possible to divide the main tenets of Nazi cultural policy into two halves: one concerned with the preservation of German racial purity, the other with the upholding of reactionary attitudes against ‘modernism’ in the arts. The chapter on antisemitism discussed how a series of exclusionary legislative acts, coupled with an extensive and relentless propaganda campaign, went some way towards realising the first of these objectives. In contrast, the Nazi regime found the proscription of modernism, especially in the area of music, a more problematical task.
