Abstract

If the overwhelming impression gleaned from analysing the evolution of state controls over musical life during the Third Reich suggests that policy decisions were often conditioned more by the personal vicissitudes and vested interests manifested by the individual Nazi leaders rather than by rigid adherence to ideological principles, it must also be remembered that the Nazi leadership remained fundamentally united in many of its cultural aims. In particular, the Nazis were committed to carrying through their programme of anti-semitism, its ultimate goal being the complete removal of Jewish influence from German music.
