Abstract

Craik and Lockhart’s theoretical paper set out to challenge the widely accepted ‘multi-store’ model of memory (see Atkinson & Shiffrin, 1968), and to replace it with a new framework for memory research centred on the concept of levels of processing. This summary of their paper gives a brief description of the multi-store model, reviews Craik and Lock hart’s objections to it, and then examines their arguments in favour of the levels of processing approach which they advocate.
