Hermeticism and Science

  • Wendell V. Harris

Abstract

Why has a mode of thought which is so reductive in its treatment of literature, which makes literature so marginal, which is so sterile in its conclusions been so influential in literary studies? The wave of hermetic criticism appears to have crested, but the terminology and modes of thought it provided linger. How is it that these have so thoroughly infiltrated the language and structures of argument in literary study, and why has hermeticism had so much greater an effect on literary commentary than elsewhere?
