We have now set up the broadest framework which will help us ultimately to locate historical agents and subjects, but are still far short of establishing the indispensable concept of a total social formation. That implies an exploration of our four practices, as the arenas in which the actual constitution of agents and subjects takes place. Two of these have already been designated as forming the fundamental material foundation, the procreative and the economic, and in this chapter I shall attempt to theorise these.
