Abstract
In chapter 4 it was shown that it is possible that changes in the equilibrium rates of growth of the money supply may influence real variables in the economy, specifically the capital-labour ratio. However, the analysis involved a high level of abstraction and it is the purpose of this chapter to examine the causes and effects of inflation in developing countries in a more realistic context. The first section presents some evidence regarding the characteristics of inflation in developing countries, the second section examines causes of inflation and the third and fourth sections consider some of the possible consequences for growth.
