Abstract

The peacekeeping operation in the Congo (now Zaire) presented the first serious challenge to the United Nations to prove its capacity for collective action in a complex situation. Some precedents established during the Congo experience stand to this day; but the controversy surrounding certain actions taken by the UN forces in the Congo has also had a long-lasting effect.
