Abstract

The main intention of this book has been to provide a perspective on the rapidly developing field of health status and health-related quality-of-life measurement which emphasises the process of change. Indeed the developments have been so rapid and so extensive that it is not easy to ‘keep up’ with the field. Katz and his colleagues could scarcely have anticipated, as they laboured over the domains of the activities of daily living some 35 years ago that they would be part of a movement which led to such ambitious activities as the calculation of health state utilities and quality-adjusted life-years!
