Abstract

A hundred years ago, on the threshold of the twentieth century, blacksmiths and builders of horse-drawn carriages were in steady employment. Even the wisest and most far-sighted of social commentators alive then did not foresee (and could not have foreseen) how the motor car would change the way people lived in the twentieth century.
