Abstract

India’s textile industry has been characterized by a distinct trend towards the informal, small-scale production of cloth. This has, over time, led to an overwhelming dominance of the informal sector, which presently accounts for nearly four fifths of total cloth output. This process has been accompanied by a corresponding decline in the formal manufacture of cloth, in absolute as well as in relative terms.
