Abstract

Why is it that vegetables from Africa are on sale in supermarkets in the UK, when the media lead us to believe that there is starvation in their country of origin? Why do LDCs export foodstuffs, when their own citizens are short of food? Why would a country facing starvation sell exotic fruits to industrialised countries? Why are the governments of some LDCs forcing peasant farmers off the land, and importing cereals which they could grow themselves?
