Abstract

Since World War II, Germany has accepted millions of fugitives and immigrants from different ethnic origins and nationalities, from all parts of Europe and the world. Since the political upheavals in Eastern Europe, Germany has once more been the target of large-scale immigration movements: Between 1989 and 1992, four million people migrated to Germany at a rate of one million per year.
