Abstract
The social impact of the economic crisis that hit Latin America in the 1980s, together with the continued implementation of macroeconomic adjustment policies in the early 1990s, have emphasised the need to obtain information about social conditions in Latin American countries, and particularly to carry out studies that will provide an in-depth analysis of the living standards of the poorest sectors of the population.
