Goldsmith as a Dramatist and a Person
Dr Goldsmith was the first to attack this illegitimate species of writing [sentimentalism], by his successive productions of The Good Natur’d Man, and She Stoops to Conquer. Our hero followed, with his Piety in Pattens;1 in which he introduces, in the true ballad style, ‘How a maiden of low degree, by the mere effects of morality and virtue, raised herself to riches and honours.’ These two being supported by other writers, soon laid the ghost of sentimental comedy; and John Bull was once more restored to his usual laugh and good humour.
