1. - During the 1980s, the rate of growth of the economy in southern Italy — the Mezzogiorno — slowed considerably compared with the north-central region. As a result, the distance between the “two Italies”, rather than narrowing, has widened. The sluggishness of industry in the South is one of the determinant factors causing the Mezzogiorno to lag behind the more economically developed areas of Italy.
