The Project of Cultural Revolution

When the Bolsheviks seized power in October 1917 they had no theory describing the rôle culture and the entire superstructure would play in the future socialist society. Leading Marxist theorists and critics such as Mehring and Plekhanov had developed general ideas on the function of culture in bourgeois and feudal society, and in this area they had made important contributions. The concrete questions of cultural policy that interested the parties of the Second International, however, were for the most part limited to education and cultural propagation within the labour movement under capitalism. Scarcely any thought at all had been given to the question of the active participatory rôle culture and ideology would play, once the working class had accomplished the socialist revolution and embarked upon what Marxist theory declared to be its historic mission of abolishing class society.
