Abstract

Materials that are sufficiently electrically insulating can sustain large internal macroscopic electric fields with negligible electric current and negligible internal heating. Such materials can show electric properties dominated by the polarisation of bound charge as described in Chapter 6, section 6.2. When this situation applies, the materials are often called dielectric materials.
