It had been a busy, exhausting, but happy day for the staff of the Quaker Peace Centre. Seven thousand children had been bussed into leafy Maynardsville Park from all over the Cape Flats — a sprawling area east of Cape Town officially designated for ‘Coloured’ settlement. The occasion was International Children’s Day, 22 September 1990, and the Peace Centre had been one of about ten groups responsible for planning and organizing the day’s activities.
