Akenside was the son of a butcher. He was born and educated at Newcastle upon Tyne. He studied theology at Edinburgh but soon changed to medicine, in which subject he achieved distinction at Edinburgh, Leiden and Cambridge. He practised successfully and, in 1761, became a physician to Queen Charlotte.
