‘The Changeling’

Part of the English Dramatists book series (ENGDRAMA)

Abstract

The licence for The Changeling (written with William Rowley), dated 7 May 1622, indicates that the play was ‘to be acted by the Lady Elizabeth’s servants at The Phoenix’. Although the company’s name was the same as that which had performed A Chaste Maid in Cheapside at the Swan in 1613, it seems certain that this was in fact a newly formed company, and that The Changeling was their first production.1
