The Federal Republic and the New International Division of Labour: Crucial Developments in the 1970s

  • Chapter
The Internationalization of the German Political Economy

Part of the book series: International Political Economy Series ((IPES))

Abstract

The transition from the old complementary international division of labour to a new one whose characteristic structural feature is the internationalization of production in the manufacturing industry is proceeding in a protracted and complex transformation process which exhibits both dynamic and retarding features, ruptures as well as crisisladen upheavals. By the early 1980s the global economic system had entered into a phase in which the tendencies toward change over a longer period of time had already so gained in importance that they had qualitatively altered the system. The characteristic structures of the old international division of labour declined in significance. The prevailing internationalization of production led to a new evaluation of production locations, which amounted to the decapitalization of unprofitable plants, the modernization of existing ones, and the construction of new ones.
