Part of the book series: St Antony's ((STANTS))

Abstract

Extreme old age is a time for quiet reflection on the past when all the burdens of life and action are laid down. The life reflected upon may be real or imagined, the scope of achievement exaggerated, the days of childhood confused with ideas of later years. Death, the remaining certainty, is lived with daily as the ultimate experience. It is no longer remote and no longer to be resisted. Is an old man of great achievement who clings to power well beyond his capacity to lead to be admired for his determination? Pitied rather, for there is a natural rhythm to life and clinging blindly to power in old age is a pathetic action which refuses to admit that there are always younger men ready and able to take over.

The wonder is that he hath endur’d so long.
