Chapter

Abstract

In this chapter we analyse the determinants of exchange rates and the implications of exchange rate movements. We shall see that there is an important connection between the exchange rate and the balance of payments. We are also concerned with the implications of exchange rate movements for international trade and protection. We shall see that there is an important connection in the short run between changes in the exchange rate and changes in the rate of interest and in the long run between changes in the rate of inflation in different countries and changes in the exchange rate.
