Abstract

The EC has since its inception been committed to achieving ‘economic and monetary union’. All the papers in this section of the volume are prompted by that latter objective. In this brief introductory essay, the background to the current discussion of monetary union is set out; this will provide the context for the debate to which the following papers contribute. This is followed by a short guide to the main points of the papers.
