Abstract

There has always been a need for some people to work whilst the rest of us sleep—shepherds, sentinels, nurses, and so on. In ancient Rome, heavy traffic was limited to the night hours, so as to minimize interference with the daytime activities of the citizens. Industrialization and the increasing complexity of urban life have led to a steady proliferation of night-time working.
