Abstract

The Bank of England occupies a central position in the UK financial system in terms of its main activities and areas of responsibility. This chapter describes the various roles that the Bank takes on, and puts them in the context of the overall powers that it enjoys, particularly in relation to the supervisory activities carried out and the possibility of the emergence of a European Central Bank. Given the pervasive influence of the Bank of England over the UK financial system, it is no surprise that later chapters also contain a great deal of further information on its business.
