Abstract

In this chapter I shall examine a number of approaches to understanding the political responses of the unemployed. The debates and literature are, rather surprisingly I think, relatively underdeveloped. I shall also discuss in more detail the work of Piven and Cloward (1977) and Schlozman and Verba (1979) carried out in the USA.
