Abstract
Although motherhood is as old as the human race, there is no evidence that it is becoming less difficult. The arrival of a baby produces stresses in a marriage which can be devastating, however well the parents have prepared for it. Many people who have planned their future and perhaps delayed parenthood until everything was ready will say that they had not realised quite what an upheaval having a child would entail. The effects of a baby on a teenage couple, themselves not fully mature and without as yet a clear vision of their future, are going to be fairly traumatic. When the mother is a young teenager of 14 or 15, and single, things are going to be far from easy.
